Student Teaching

All Information under the Student Teacher Tabs are current as off Spring 2014

Student Teaching Orientation

At the very end of the semester prior to student teaching, you will receive an email from Sue Wood and/or Tim Sutton informing you of your acceptance into the Student Teaching program, your Mentor Teachers and their schools, your Supervising Teacher, and that you should attend a mandatory Student Teacher Orientation meeting the week before school starts up after the break.

The Student Teacher Handbook and Mentor Teacher Handbook are very helpful places to find information about Student Teaching and in fact you will need to print out the Student Teacher Handbook, fill out/sign, and bring with you, the Acknowledgement of Student Teaching Handbook/Liability Insurance and Waiver of Liability form and the FERPA Consent form

Student Teacher Handbook         Mentor Teacher Handbook

Both of these PDFs are located on the Clinical Practices page of the UNT COE website, this link is located in the green box on the top right hand side of this page.

At the Student Teacher Orientation they will go over all of the general Student Teaching information you need to know including, but not limited to; Testing, Certification, Tk20, Assessments, and Expectations.

Testing

You NEED to take and pass your PPR and EC-12 tests before you graduate. For more information on these tests see the PPR and ART EC-12 tab. It is important to know before hand that you should start saving up to take these tests early on as both of them cost $120 to take and they will not be the only fees you will pay on the road to certification.

Certification

In order to get Certified you will need to have:

  • Passed both the PPR and ART EC-12

  • Graduated UNT

  • Get Fingerprinted (this will probably hapen when you take your tests. This will also cost money.)

For more information see the Certification tab.

Tk20

You will have needed to buy Tk20 in order to register for your EDEE and EDSE Student Teaching classes earlier. When you take your Legal Issues In Education class. They will tell you that you do not need to buy Tk20. What they mean is, you will not have to turn in any of your assignments for this class to Tk20 like all of the other Education majors. But you will need to buy this program at some point. They will talk to you about this in your Foundations or Observations classes. Tk20 costs about $108.

Expectations

You can find out all of the details at your Orientation Meeting at UNT, your Orientation Meeting for your assigned district, if they have one, and in the Student Teaching Handbook. Some of the highlights include:

  • Make sure your Facebook profile is set to private and all of your online media presence is teacher appropriate.

  • Dress appropriately: no facial piercings, no visible tattoos, even if your school says that you can wear jeans and piercings and what not, don't do it.

  • Be on time: There are no absences allowed, although there are usually a few make up days available if you ever get to sick to show up. If you miss a day for EITHER an interview OR the career fair, you might not have to make up that day, but check with Tim Sutton first. Make sure you let your mentor teacher and supervising teacher know that you will be absent if you ever are and to figure out when your make up dates will be.
